The carol I chose to analyze was "Silent Night." Jesus, in the Bible and the song, is described as holy, radiant, love personified, humble, tender, and compassionate. He is also referred to by many various names - Son of God, Son of Man, Immanuel, the Lamb, Messiah, Savior, Lord. On the whole, the Bible says that Jesus was the perfect person, without sin, God in human form, who came down in all his glory to the lowest of lows. The song however does not focus on circumstances of Jesus' birth and instead interprets the atmosphere of the birth. Instead of focusing on how Jesus was born in a manger in a stable surrounded by animals, it says "silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright." It shows the innocence of Jesus as a child, even as God made human, and the serenity of the night regardless of location and circumstance.
What was necessary from each of the people involved in the story of the birth of Jesus was one thing: faith. Mary had faith that her sudden pregnancy was truly of the Holy Spirit to birth the Messiah. Joseph had faith that Mary was not lying to him and that the conception was truly immaculate. The wise men had faith that a star would lead them to the birth of a king, however ridiculous that may have seemed. And the shepherds had faith that the sounds and sights they saw out in the fields was not their minds playing tricks on them after long hours in the fields on a cold night, but rather signs of the arrival of the Son of God.
God showed that he was a loving God through his descent to Earth. He came through the form of a baby; not only a baby but one born in a dirty manger in a stable. He was born not to any of the kings or wealthy or great men of the Earth, but to a simple carpenter in circumstances that were questionable to any who observed. This humble birth shows that God knew what his people were going through. He could connect to their struggles and trials not just by knowledge and by observing, but by living through those experiences himself. By becoming a human but yet rising above the sin that encumbered all of humanity, God showed also his glory and power, made all the more strong through his use of a humble vessel. Thus the God showed in the Bible and through Jesus Christ was proven to be a loving God.
